2014, a year of records for French cinema

This report, presented as every year a few days before the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, confirms the good crop of last year, after a 2013 vintage duller.

2014 a good year for the big screen. French cinema is doing well despite a fall in production: in 2014, the number of French films distributed in theaters and the number of entries crossed record ever achieved for over 30 years, according to the CNC.

Side attendance, total 208 970 000 spectators bought tickets (+ 7.9%) in 2014, of which only 91.26 million for French films (+ 41.2%), the latter figure constitutes a record since 30 years.

These performances enable French films to approach attendance Americans, whose inputs fell 9.5% to 93.37 million, representing a market share of 45.4%.

The largest European market in terms of cinema attendanceAnd suddenly, the France remains by far the largest European market in terms of cinema attendance, ahead of Great Britain (157.5 million tickets sold, 4.9%), Germany (121.7 million -6.1%) and Italy (99.3 million, -6.1%), a total of 911 million tickets sold in the European Union (+ 0.7%).

On average, nearly 40 million viewers (+ 4%) went to the movies 5.3 times last year, according to statistics from the CNC.What one movie what we did to God ?, comedy about the coexistence of religions in French society, achieved more than 12 million entries by itself.

Film production is decliningMain black spot in the table, film production declined in 2014 in France (-12 films 25 , primarily after a "sharp decline in foreign investment" (-47.6%) in co-productions, says CNC a statement.

Overall, the country produced less than big budget films (-12 movies with budgets exceeding € 10 million) and fewer low-budget films (-5 films less than 2 million euros).Investments of cinema in TV remained broadly stable at 291 170 000 euros: that of pay channels fell 6.4% to 177.96 million euros and those of FTA channels increased from 10.1% to 111.84 million euros.
